Typically, in states where the green, leafy substance has been legalized, the testing of retail and medical marijuana by government-certified labs is conducted by taking a sample from one section of the source plant.
But what if that part of the plant has a higher concentration of the main psychoactive ingredient of marijuana – THC – than the rest of the plant? It can result in a product that isn’t labeled accurately, misleading consumers to get more or less than they bargained for, which is a big problem for medical marijuana patients trying to control their doctor-recommended dosage.
That’s the problem the newly licensed PureVita Labs LLC, based inside a 6,800-square-foot facility in West Warwick, is aiming to solve, with the ultimate goal of becoming the premier marijuana testing facility in New England. The company, co-founded by a Rhode Island radiologist, a physician who manages urgent care centers and an experienced cannabis chemist, said its advanced analytical protocols set it apart from competitors by using on-site product testing and rapid, yet reliable analysis.
“When talking about a medical product not being accurately labeled for content, it is a big deal for patients who are trying to hone in on their effective dose and minimize the potential side effects of taking too much,” said co-founder Dr. Jason Iannuccilli.
