R.I. construction employment rises fastest in nation in August

PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island ranked No. 1 in the nation for year-over-year construction employment growth percentage in August, according to the Associated General Contractors of America.

Construction employment in the Ocean State rose by 3,200 jobs over the year, a 17.6 percent increase, to 21,400 jobs. Rhode Island also ranked No. 1 in the nation for monthly construction employment rate gains in August, rising 5.4 percent, or 1,100 jobs, from July.

Construction employment in Nevada grew the second-largest percentage in the nation year over year, increasing 15.3 percent, or 11,600 jobs, to 87,500.

California saw the largest nominal year-over-year increase in construction employment in August, adding 47,400 jobs for a total of 824,900, a 6.1 percent increase.

In New England, the second-largest percentage increase of construction employment occurred in New Hampshire, where August construction employment rose 12.2 percent year over year, an uptick of 3,100 jobs bringing the state’s total to 28,600 construction jobs. New Hampshire’s yearly percentage increase ranked No. 3 in the nation.

The rest of New England saw the following year-over-year changes:

  • Maine: 1,600 jobs, +5.9 percent, No. 12 in the nation
  • Massachusetts: 3,400 jobs, +2.3 percent, No. 25 in the nation
  • Connecticut: -1,200 jobs, -2 percent, No. 46 in the nation
  • Vermont: -300 jobs, -2 percent, No. 46 in the nation
