R.I. DMV wins community service award

CRANSTON – The R.I. Division of Motor Vehicles received a 2017 Community Service Award from the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators, the DMV announced Tuesday.

The award, which was given to 14 motor vehicle registries nationwide, was given for the R.I. DMV’s “Dress Down for Charity” program, which allows employees of the DMV to pay $1 to wear casual clothes on a Friday, with proceeds going to several national, state and local nonprofit organizations. The program began in 1995.

“We thank AAMVA for recognizing our efforts and placing us among the other state motor vehicle registries that understand the value of community service,” said R.I. DMV Administrator Walter R. Craddock. “I am very proud of the way DMV employees have embraced this charitable program over the years and shown a consistent willingness to give back to communities in Rhode Island and to support charitable organizations.”

R.I. DMV employees donated approximately $111,000 from 1995 through December 2015 through the “Dress Down for Charity” program, according the release from the DMV.
