PROVIDENCE – Fire departments in North Kingstown and Barrington have received a total of $2 million in federal funding as a part of the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response grant program, U.S. Sens. Jack F. Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse and U.S. Reps. James R. Langevin and David N. Cicilline announced Saturday.
“Our firefighters do an outstanding job and I am pleased to help deliver federal funding to help those fire departments add to their ranks,” said Reed.

The North Kingstown Fire Department will receive approximately $1.5 million as a part of the grant program, funding that will go towards hiring nine full-time firefighters. The Department offers fire and emergency response services to nearly 26,000 residents in North Kingstown as well as the 3,300-acre Quonset Business Park.
The Barrington Fire Department will receive $532,542 to fund the salaries and benefits of four additional firefighters for the first two years of their employment. In the third year, funds will be used to cover 35 percent of salaries and benefits. The Department offers coverage to 17,000 residents of Barrington including 15.4 square miles of land and water.
“Ensuring that our Fire Departments are fully-staffed is critical for the safety and well-being of Rhode Islanders,” Cicilline said. “I look forward to welcoming these new firefighters to our state’s incredible team of first responders.”
