PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island is among the states that are most affected by the current federal government shutdown that is now in its third week, according to WalletHub. To determine its rankings, researchers at the finance website examined five basic metrics that speak to how people across the country are affected by the absence of government services: share of federal jobs, federal contract dollars per capita, percentage of families receiving SNAP benefits, real estate as a percentage of gross state product and access to national parks. Each metric was scored on a 100-point scale, with 100 representing the biggest impact from the government shutdown. Data as of Oct. 11 from the U.S. Census Bureau, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, usaspending.gov, National Association of Realtors and National Park Service was used to create the rankings, which included Washington, D.C. Rhode Island ranks 16th with a total score of 36. Massachusetts is 24th with a total score of 32.91. Washington is the most affected according to WalletHub, followed by Hawaii, New Mexico, Alaska and Maryland. Minnesota is the least affected state, below Iowa, Indiana, Nebraska and New Hampshire. Little progress has been made to end the shutdown, with Republicans and Democrats digging in and convinced their messaging is resonating with voters. The fate of the federal workers is among several pressure points that could eventually push the sides to agree to resolve the stalemate. The shutdown began on Oct. 1 after Democrats rejected a short-term funding fix and demanded that the bill include an extension of federal subsidies for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act. President Donald Trump and other Republican leaders have said the government must reopen before they will negotiate with Democrats on the health subsidies.
