R.I. COVID-19 cases rise by 167 with no new deaths

PROVIDENCE – Confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Rhode Island increased by 167 on Wednesday, with no new deaths, the R.I. Department of Health said Thursday.

Daily case counts in the state have trended upward in recent weeks, after a lull in June and early July.

Hospitalizations of COVID-19 patients in the state totaled 32, an increase of three from the day before. Of those hospitalized, seven were in intensive care units and four were on a ventilator.

The department said that there have been 76.3 new cases per 100,000 Rhode Islanders in the past seven days, which the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention define as “substantial transmission.”

There have been 656,706 individuals fully vaccinated against the virus in Rhode Island, as well as 1.32 million total COVID-19 vaccine doses administered.

Confirmed cases in the state now total 154,153, an increase of 199 from figures reported Wednesday, accounting for the day-to-day increase as well as data revisions for previous days.

Deaths due to the virus in Rhode Island have totaled 2,739.

There were 6,140 tests processed Wednesday with an overall positive rate of 2.7%. When excluding both repeat positive and repeat negative test results, the positive rate was 13.5%.

There have been 4.61 million tests administered in the state to date to 979,587 individuals.
