R.I., Mass. gas prices up 4 cents

PROVIDENCE – The price of self-serve, regular unleaded gasoline in Rhode Island increased 4 cents this week to average $2.60 per gallon, 6 cents below the national average of $2.66, according to AAA Northeast Monday.

This time last year, prices in Rhode Island were 35 cents lower at $2.25 per gallon.

  • Midgrade gasoline averaged $2.92 this week, ranging from $2.81 to $3.09 per gallon.
  • Premium gas averaged $3.10 this week, ranging from $2.89 to $3.19 per gallon.
  • Diesel fuel averaged $3.01 this week, ranging from $2.97 to $3.05 per gallon.

“Gas prices are going up across the country as the market continues to purge winter-blend gasoline to make room for summer storage,” said Lloyd Albert, AAA Northeast senior vice president of public and government affairs, in a statement. “Today, only 38 percent of U.S.  stations are selling gasoline for $2.50 or less and that percentage will likely dwindle in the coming weeks.”

Regular gas prices in Massachusetts also increased 4 cents this week to average $2.54 per gallon, 12 cents below the national average. Last year at this time, Massachusetts regular gas was 35 cents cheaper at $2.19 per gallon.
