CRANSTON – Rhode Island’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in November was 4.3%, down slightly from 4.5% in September, the R.I. Department of Labor and Training said Tuesday. No labor force estimates were produced for October 2025 due to the federal government shutdown, the DLT said. The U.S. unemployment rate was 4.6% in November, up from 4.4% in September, according to the DLT. The Rhode Island jobless rate was 4.5% in November 2024, while the U.S. rate was 4.2%. The DLT says the number of unemployed Rhode Islanders in September – those actively looking for work – was 25,200, down 1,100 from September and 1,600 from a year ago. The number of employed residents was 565,800 in November, up 2,200 from September and 1,200 year over year, the DLT said. Overall, the state’s labor force totaled 591,000 in November, up 1,200 from September but down 400 from November 2024. The state’s nonfarm jobs in November totaled 513,900, an increase of 200 from the October jobs figure [which was recently made available despite the federal government shutdown] of 513,700 but down 500 from November 2024, the DLT said. These jobs exclude farming and some government, private and nonprofit workers. Over the past three months, the Rhode Island economy has lost 400 jobs, or an average loss of over 100 jobs per month, the DLT said. Seasonally adjusted nonfarm payrolls in Rhode Island by sector in November:

Accommodation and food services: 51,800, a decrease of 100 since September and down 600 year over year.

Administrative and waste services: 29,000, an increase of 100 since September and 200 year over year.

Arts, entertainment and recreation: 8,000, up 100 since September but down 500 year over year.

Construction: 22,800, up 100 from September and 200 year over year.

Educational services: 28,100, up 100 from September and 1,200 year over year.

Finance and insurance: 28,200, down 100 since September and 400 year over year.

Government: 65,800, up 100 from September but down 700 year over year.

Health care and social assistance: 86,500, up 300 since September and 200 year over year.

Information: 5,200, down 100 since September and 300 year over year.

Management of companies and enterprises: 10,100, same as September but down 100 year over year.

Manufacturing: 40,300, same as September but up 600 year over year. Production workers in the sector earned $26.71 per hour in November, 34 cents higher than in September and $1 from November 2024.

Professional, scientific and technical services: 32,200, up 300 from September and 900 year over year.

Real estate, rental and leasing: 6,500, up 100 from September but same year over year.

Retail trade: 46,500, down 100 from September and 1,100 year over year.

Transportation, warehousing and utilities: 14,100, down 200 from September but same year over year.
