CRANSTON – Rhode Island’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in January was 4.6%, up from the revised 4.5% rate in December, the R.I. Department of Labor and Training said Thursday. The U.S. unemployment rate was 4% in January, down from 4.1% in December, according to the DLT. The Rhode Island jobless rate was 3.9% in January 2024, while the U.S. rate was 3.7%. The DLT says the number of unemployed Rhode Islanders in January was 27,100, up 300 from December and up 4,000 from a year ago. The number of employed residents was 564,100 in January, down 600 from the previous month but remained unchanged year over year, the DLT said. Overall, the state’s labor force totaled 591,100 in January, down 300 from December but up 3,900 from January 2024. The state’s nonfarm jobs in December numbered 515,100, an increase of 600 from the revised December jobs figure of 514,500 and up 7,400 from January 2024, the DLT said. These jobs exclude farming and some government, private and nonprofit workers. In the past three months, the local economy has added 1,200 jobs, an average of 400 jobs per month, the DLT said. Rhode Island has not reported a monthly job decline since July 2024. The largest monthly job gains in January were noted in the educational services sector, with 3,900 jobs added. Construction lost 300 jobs in January, the largest monthly decline among all employment sectors. Seasonally adjusted nonfarm payrolls in Rhode Island by sector in January:

Accommodation and food services: 52,800, an increase of 100 since December and an increase of 1,300 year over year.

Administrative and waste services: 27,700, a decrease of 200 since December and down 400 year over year.

Arts, entertainment and recreation: 8,500, an increase of 100 since December but the same year over year.

Construction: 22,300, down 300 from December but up 600 year over year.

Educational services: 26,900, an increase of 900 since December and down 1,000 year over year.

Finance and insurance: 28,500, down 100 since December but the same year over year.

Government: 66,600, an increase of 100 from December and up 2,300 year over year.

Health care and social assistance: 86,700, an increase of 100 since December and up 2,500 year over year.

Information: 5,600, an increase of 100 from December but down 100 year over year.

Management of companies and enterprises: 10,100, down 200 from December and down 500 year over year.

Manufacturing: 40,000, the same as December but down 100 year over year. Production workers in the sector earned $25.83 per hour in January, 31 cents more than in December and down 32 cents from January 2024.

Professional, scientific and technical services: 30,100, down 100 from December and up 600 year over year.

Wholesale trade: 16,700, the same as December but up 500 year over year.
