CRANSTON – Rhode Island’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in July was 4.8%, the same as June, the R.I. Department of Labor and Training said Thursday. The U.S. unemployment rate was 4.2% in July, up from 4.1% the previous month, according to the DLT. The Rhode Island jobless rate was 4.4% in July 2024, while the U.S. rate was 4.2%. The DLT says the number of unemployed Rhode Islanders in July – those actively looking for work – was 28,100, down 300 from June but up 2,000 from a year ago. The number of employed residents was 559,600 in July, up 600 from the previous month but down 5,900 year over year, the DLT said. Overall, the state’s labor force – the number of people employed or looking for work – totaled 587,700 in July, up 300 from June but down 3,900 from July 2024. The state’s nonfarm jobs in July totaled 513,700, an increase of 500 from the June jobs figure of 513,200 and up 2,200 from July 2024, the DLT said. These jobs exclude farming and some government, private and nonprofit workers. In the past three months, the local economy has lost 2,100 jobs, an average loss of 700 jobs per month. The arts, entertainment and recreation sector continues to shed jobs, losing 300 jobs in July. This sector has lost jobs for five consecutive months. Seasonally adjusted nonfarm payrolls in Rhode Island by sector in July:

Accommodation and food services: 51,800, an increase of 300 since June and up 200 year over year.

Administrative and waste services: 29,200, a decrease of 200 since June but an increase of 900 year over year.

Arts, entertainment and recreation: 7,300, down 300 from June and down 1,400 year over year.

Construction: 22,400, down 100 from June but up 100 year over year.

Educational services: 27,200, same as June but up 300 year over year.

Finance and insurance: 28,300, up 100 since June but down 300 year over year.

Government: 66,100, up 700 from June but down 900 year over year.

Health care and social assistance: 85,300, down 400 since June but up 400 year over year.

Information: 5,400, down 100 since June and down 200 year over year.

Management of companies and enterprises: 10,100, down 100 from June and down 200 year over year.

Manufacturing: 40,200, up 100 from June and 100 year over year. Production workers in the sector earned $25.69 per hour in July, 23 cents more than in June but down 66 cents from July 2024.

Professional, scientific and technical services: 32,700, up 300 from June and up 1,600 year over year.
Real estate and leasing: 6,400, down 200 from June and down 100 year over year.

Retail trade: 46,400: up 100 from June but down 900 year over year.

Wholesale trade: 16,800, same as June and up 400 year over year.
