R.I. personal income per capita ranks No. 17 in nation in 2018

PROVIDENCE – Per capita personal income in Rhode Island was $54,523 in 2018, ranking No. 17 in the nation, according to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis Tuesday.

Rhode Island’s per capita income ranked No. 4 in the New England, where regional per capita income was $66,592 for the year. Nationally, per capita income for 2018 was $53,712.

Connecticut had the highest per capita personal income of any state in the country in 2018 at $74,561, followed by Massachusetts at No. 2 in the nation with $70,073. New York ranked No. 3 in the nation with per capita personal income of $68,667.

  • In New England, following Connecticut and Massachusetts, was New Hampshire at $61,405 in per capita personal income in 2018, ranking third in the region and No. 7 in the nation
  • Rhode Island ranked No. 4 in the region and No. 17 in the U.S at $54,523
  • Vermont personal income per capita was $53,598 for the year, No. 19 in the nation and fifth in the region
  • Maine personal income per capita was $48,241 in 2018, ranking No. 30 in the nation and last in New England

Over the year, Rhode Island’s total growth in personal income was 3.1 percent, which ranked No. 48 in the nation, ahead of only Nebraska (3.1 percent as well) and Hawaii (2.9 percent).

New England total yearly personal income growth for 2018:

  • Massachusetts: 4.3 percent growth (No. 22 in the nation) to $483.7 billion
  • Maine: 4 percent growth (No. 27 in the U.S.) to $64.6 billion
  • New Hampshire: 4 percent increase (No. 31 in the U.S.) to $83.3 billion
  • Connecticut: 3.4 percent increase (No. 42 in the country) to $266.4 billion
  • Vermont: 3.1 percent increase (No. 47 in the U.S.) to $33.6 billion
  • Rhode Island: 3.1 percent growth (No. 48 in the U.S.) to $57.6 billion
