The money is part of more than $50 million the program allocated to all 50 state and U.S. territorial wildlife agencies.

SWGP grants are administered by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service’s Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration Program according to a congressionally mandated formula based on population and geographic area. The program helps states implement approved State Wildlife Action Plans, which list species and habitats in need of assistance. These grants will support state conservation efforts of nongame fish and wildlife.
SWGP is the only federal program with the explicit goal of preventing endangered species listings, according to a news release.
“When we can recover species before they are listed under the Endangered Species Act, that means more federal resources for the other species that need it most,” Zinke said in a statement.
