PROVIDENCE – Legislation requiring insurers to provide full coverage for colorectal cancer screening passed the R.I. Senate on Thursday, and is now bound for the R.I. House.

The measure, 2020-S 2317A, requires health insurers to cover all preventive colorectal screenings and lab tests recommended by the American Cancer Society. The bill prohibits cost-sharing for screenings, and provides for a follow-up colonoscopy if needed.

Sen. Maryellen Goodwin, D-Providence, who is undergoing treatment for colon cancer herself, sponsored the legislation.

“I can personally attest to how critically important it is that everyone is able to get recommended colorectal cancer screening. Cancer screening is routine preventive care that catches cancer early and saves lives, as well as reducing health care costs down the road,” Goodwin said. “Copays, cost-sharing and insurers that don’t cover prescreening only discourage people from getting the care they need to protect themselves.”
