R.I. Treasurer’s Office returns $11.6M in unclaimed property during FY 22

PROVIDENCE – The state has helped return more than $11.6 million in unclaimed checks, inheritances and other unclaimed property to 16,000 residents during fiscal year 2022, according to a news release from the R.I. Office of the General Treasurer.

The treasurer’s Division of Unclaimed Property works to locate and reunite people with their financial assets if the companies that hold these assets do not return them on their own.

Since 2015, the division has helped return more than $94.2 million to 137,700 recipients, the release stated.

Unclaimed property includes utility deposits, inheritances, stocks and bonds, bank accounts, uncashed payroll checks, life insurance policies, traveler’s checks, and contents from deposit boxes.
