R.I. to receive $2.4M for community development and affordable housing

PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island has awarded $2.4 million in a round of federal grants, including $1.9 million in Community Development Block Grant funding as well as $330,974 from the Home Investment Partnership, also known as the HOME program, and $106,023 from the Emergency Solutions Grant program, U.S. Sens. Jack F. Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse announced Sunday.

Funds are administered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Of the $1.9 million in CDBG money, Woonsocket is scheduled to receive $1.24 million and East Providence $691,510. These funds may be used for capital improvement projects or be distributed to nonprofits to increase housing, supportive service and job opportunities.

Woonsocket is also the recipient of the $330,974 HOME grant, which can be used to expand the supply of quality, affordable housing for working families. The $106,023 in ESG funds were also awarded to Woonsocket to upgrade and expand emergency housing for people experiencing homelessness.

“By expanding access to affordable housing for Rhode Islanders, we are able to build stronger and more stable communities and boost our economy.  When these federal funds are leveraged with local resources, residents of Woonsocket and East Providence will be able to access affordable housing and continue to strengthen both communities,” said Reed.
