WASHINGTON – The National Council on Teacher Quality named four Rhode Island schools in its Landscapes in teacher prep undergraduate secondary study, which looks at higher education’s ability to prepare qualified and quality teachers.
Of the four schools, Providence College, Salve Regina University, University of Rhode Island and Roger Williams University, none cracked the top tier, but URI scored the best in the state with a 92 percentile ranking. Salve Regina followed close behind with 89; Providence College, 76; and Roger Williams, 52.

In the report, the NCTQ noted that it’s top-tier schools, the 16 top schools, were “contrary to some expectations” and that “today’s top-ranked teacher-prep programs are not located on the most elite – and expensive – campuses; rather, some of the best programs are found in relatively small, not widely known colleges and universities.”
URI placed just behind 93-percentile-ranked Boston College, and both URI and Salve Regina placed ahead of 87-percentile-ranked Simmons College. Only one school in New England cracked the top-tier schools in 2016, and it was Gordon College in Wenham, Mass., with a 98-percentile ranking.
The study looked at 717 schools and used several weighted educational standards, such as diversity, selectivity, student teaching and selection criteria.
