Presented by Col. Ann C. Assumpico, superintendent of the R.I. State Police and director of the Department of Public Safety, and Massachusetts State Police Lt. William Coulter, chairman of the board of directors for Cops for Kids with Cancer, the money was raised by seven Rhode Island state troopers who ran in the Boston Marathon as a fundraiser for the cancer organization.

At the presentation, Lt. John Grassel, one of the state troopers who ran in the marathon, told the honorees and their families they were “among his heroes” and that he was “inspired” by them.
