In a statement made Friday, Bryant President Ronald K. Machtley said Fogarty’s work at the Chafee Center was “instrumental in providing business with the resources to embark in international commerce.”
On behalf of the center, in 2016, Fogarty accepted the President’s “E” Star Award for Export Service from U.S. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker. The award is the highest recognition any U.S. entity can receive for making a significant contribution to the expansion of U.S. exports.
Prior to his leadership of the Chafee Center, Fogarty, also served as associate director of the school’s Small Business Development Center from 1983 to 1988 as well as assistant controller from 1979 to 1983.
Fogarty studied accounting at the Smithfield-based school and, in 1991, was recognized as a Bryant Distinguished Alumnus.
A former state representative, Fogarty served in the Rhode Island House of Representatives from 1983 to 1992.
In a statement Friday, R.I. House Speaker Nicholas A. Mattiello called Fogarty “a tremendous asset for Bryant University and all of Rhode Island’s business community.”
Outside of Bryant, Fogarty led the Northern Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce as the chair of its board of directors in 1999.
Fogarty lived in Glocester with his wife Phoebe. He leaves behind four children. Details on memorial arrangements are forthcoming from the university.
