Reed announces $132K for AmeriCorps VISTA projects in R.I.

PROVIDENCE – Sen. Jack F. Reed announced $132,000 in federal funding from the Corporation for National and Community Service for two AmeriCorps Volunteers in Service to America, or VISTA, projects in Rhode Island Friday.

The Boys & Girls Club of Newport County will receive $91,024 and the Kent Center for Human & Organizational Development will receive $41,572. The funds may be used to address poverty, homelessness, addiction and more.

“AmeriCorps members work hard and make a tremendous difference in the communities they serve, and these funds are excellent news for the state,” said Reed. “I wish the members all the best as they take on a diverse array of challenges to better our communities and help disadvantaged youth and those struggling with homelessness, drug addiction and more.”

The Boys & Girls Club of Newport County is a nonprofit dedidcated to healthy lifestyles and academic advancement of youth. The club has a membership of 1,900 individuals. AmeriCorps VISTA workers will work with the club to develop and implement new workforce development programming that will provide job placement assistance to 2,000 low-income youth and adults.

The Kent Center for Human & Organizational Development is dedicated to improving the quality of life for individuals and families facing behavioral health challenges. The organization helps coordinate the Rhode Island Supplemental Security Income/Social Security Disability Outreach, Access and Recovery, or SOAR, program. AmeriCorps VISTA members will work with the Kent Center to double the current organizational capacity of SOAR to benefit an additional 75 individuals from the state who are experiencing homelessness or suffering from a disabling mental illness, co-occurring substance use disorder, trauma or other medical issues.
