YEAR-ROUND USE: The new blacksmithing area is among renovations made to the former Providence Steel and Iron Co. building for The Steel Yard. Much of the refurbishments were made in order to allow the building to be used by students year-round. / PBN PHOTO/MICHAEL SALERNO[/caption] Use: The Steel Yard, an industrial arts nonprofit organization, recently finished making improvements and refurbishments to the former home of Providence Steel and Iron Co., originally built in 1900, in order to add capacity and to operate year-round. Upgrades to the heating and ventilation systems were made throughout the 12,000-square-foot facility, located in the city’s Valley neighborhood, and the bathrooms were upgraded to be in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. In addition to permanently removing 400 square feet of asbestos-containing materials, renovations also included a full restoration of the building’s 1920s-era electrical system, refurbished masonry walls, roofs and doors, and repurposed historic windows. The building will also have a 50-kilowatt solar array, to be installed by Newport Solar, that will feed back into the grid. [caption id="attachment_301773" align="aligncenter" width="695"]
