PROVIDENCE – The R.I. Department of Transportation has received approval from the Federal Highway Administration to proceed with construction of the next 10 truck-toll gantries planned for the state’s highways, RIDOT announced Thursday, following an FHWA environmental assessment.

The approval, RIDOT said, clears the way for construction to begin on the gantries. The department expects the first of the 10 to be completed and activated by May 2019 and expects all 10 gantries to be in place by May 2020.

RIDOT said to date, the two truck-toll locations already operational have collected $3.7 million from 1.1 million verified vehicles.

In July, the American Trucking Association sued RIDOT over the use of the truck tolls, alleging the tolls violate the U.S. Constitution. A motion to dismiss filed by the defendants has been fully briefed and is scheduled for a hearing Jan. 3 in U.S. District Court.
