PROVIDENCE – The Renaissance Providence Hotel today announced it has been named to Condé Nast Traveler’s 2008 Hot List, an annual tally of the “hottest and sexiest” hotels that opened around the world the year before.

In creating the list, magazine staffers anonymously check into new hotels around the world.

This year, 136 hotels in 53 countries were tapped for the list, including 20 in the United States. But only two New England hotels were named; the other is Boston’s The Liberty Hotel, in a building that had been a jail for 120 years.

In Condé Nast’s review of Renaissance Providence, it notes Sage Hospitality Resources’ preservation efforts (READ MORE) – the Masonic Temple’s $100 million restoration was given The Providence Preservation Society’s 2007 Special Award in Preservation – and the hotel’s décor, praising its “theatrical” lobby and “exuberant” guestrooms.

“The column-lined façade of the hulking building has been preserved, and while not the prettiest design – especially compared with the elegant neoclassic Statehouse across the way – it strikes a dramatic note,” the magazine says, adding, “With plenty of meeting space, the hotel is a no-brainer for businesspeople, but is also a perfect choice for parents visiting their university students or leisure travelers looking for an easy getaway.”

Renaissance Providence General Manager Angelo De Peri said in a statement this morning that the Hot List designation “validates our commitment to create an inspired guest experience and fuels our vision to be recognized by our customers as the best in the business.”

The Renaissance Providence Hotel, an affiliate of Marriott International Inc., is a 272-room hotel with 10,000 square feet of meeting space plus the Temple Downtown Restaurant and Lounge. Created by renovating the former Masonic Temple, which was left unfinished during the Great Depression, it was completed in 2007. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
