Report: 57.9% of R.I. tax returns have paid preparer’s signature

PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island was among the top 10 states where its easiest to get help filing taxes, according to a SmartAsset report released Friday.

Rhode Island ranked No. 8, with about 58 percent of residents utilizing local experts to file. Also, about 3.4 percent of filers get help from IRS-certified volunteers.

The report also noted states that ranked highest on the study tended to have higher state taxes than other states.

Rhode Island reportedly had 8.6 accountants per 1,000 tax returns, which accounted for 1 percent of the state’s total workforce.

Minnesota ranked No. 1 in the report, followed by Massachusetts, Connecticut, Colorado and North Dakota. Arkansas ranked last in the report.

In second-ranked Massachusetts, which had 10.5 accountants per 1,000 tax returns, 55 percent of returns were signed by a paid preparer’s signature and 2.1 percent were filed with volunteer help.
