PROVIDENCE – Six school districts in Rhode Island ranked among the top 500 school districts in America for 2018, according to a report from Alarms.org Monday.
Barrington school district was ranked No. 115 in the nation, the highest of any district in Rhode Island. East Greenwich was the second-highest school district in the state at No. 236.

- South Kingstown school district – No. 377
- Narragansett school district – No. 473
- Chariho school district (Charlestown, Richmond and Hopkinton) – No. 477
- Portsmouth school district – No. 498
The company ranked schools based on student performance (based on math and reading scores), school funding, poverty rate and dropout rate.
The report noted the poverty rate in a school district and the district’s dropout rate are often intertwined, noting, “Even if a school receives in a decent amount of funding, students can still struggle with test scores and grades if they experience a significant amount of poverty in their lives.“
The report also said funding is a key element to a successful school district, noting “schools that perform the best have plenty of [money], and those that don’t typically underperform in key areas.”
In Bristol County, Mass., Mansfield ranked the highest at No. 204. North Attleborough school district ranked No. 353 and Seekonk school district ranked No. 432.
The Naperville CUSD 203 school district in Illinois ranked No. 1 in the report, followed by Illinois’ Morton CUSD 709 and Lexington, Mass., at No. 3.
