Report: Credit of R.I. mortgage borrowers among worst in nation

PROVIDENCE – The average credit score of mortgage borrowers in Rhode Island for the second quarter of 2017 was 737, fifth lowest in the nation, tied with Kentucky, according to a CoreLogic Inc. Housing Credit Insight report.

Rhode Island’s average loan credit score was also the lowest average credit score in New England. The national average credit score for a home-buyer in the U.S. was 745 in the second quarter.

Massachusetts had the highest average credit score of those with mortgage loans according to the report at 748, just ahead of New Hampshire’s 747 score. Connecticut followed third, with a score of 744, Vermont, fourth at 742 and Maine, fifth at 741.

Hawaii had the highest average credit score of those with loans in the nation with an average credit score of 756. Mississippi had the lowest average score at 728.
