Report: Providence metro unemployment declines in Sept.

PROVIDENCE – The unemployment rate, not seasonally adjusted, in the Providence metropolitan area in September was 3.8 percent, a decline of 0.9 percentage points year over, according to a Wednesday report by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The national unemployment rate was 4.1 percent in September, not seasonally adjusted, a 0.7 percentage point decrease from a 4.8 percent unemployment rate one year prior.

The number of unemployed in the metropolitan area declined 6,139 workers year over year to 25,605. The labor force in the metro, however, increased 90 workers year over year, not seasonally adjusted, to 677,911.

Employees on nonfarm payrolls in the metro area totaled 591,400 in September, an increase of 2,500 workers year over year.

The not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for Rhode Island in September was a tick below the metro area at 3.7 percent, a 1.2 percentage point drop year over year. The number of unemployed in the state declined by 6,631 to 20,438. The  labor force in Rhode Island declined by 1,253 year over year.

Employees on nonfarm payrolls in the Ocean State increased 4,300 year over year to 499,000, a 0.9 percent increase.

The New Bedford metropolitan area in September reported a 5.1 percent unemployment rate, not seasonally adjusted, a 0.2 percentage point increase year over year. The labor force in the New Bedford metro increased by 2,865 year over year. The number of unemployed workers in the area rose 303 year over year to 4,345, not seasonally adjusted.

Employees on nonfarm payrolls in the New Bedford metro area increased by 2,800 year over year, not seasonally adjusted, to 70,700, a 4.1 percent increase year, over year.

The Massachusetts non-seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in September was 3.5 percent, a year-over-year increase of 0.2 percentage points.
