PROVIDENCE – The city was ranked the 58th most-challenging city to live in the United States if you suffer from asthma, according to a new report by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America that looks at how location influences asthma.

The 2022 Asthma Capitals report ranks the 100 most-populated cities in the United States based on three factors: asthma prevalence, death rate from asthma and emergency department visits due to asthma.

“Where they live may influence whether or not they have this common chronic lung disease and how successfully they can manage it,” according to the report.

While Providence ranked No. 58, Boston ranked No. 91, with an overall “better than average” rating.

The report was released around what is known as Asthma Peak Week, the week with a peak in asthma episodes and hospitalizations, which falls on the third week of September. The report also identified risk factors that can worsen asthma, such as air pollution, pollen, poverty and access to health care, but it did not calculate them in its ranking.
