Report: R.I. has 2nd-highest average student debt in U.S. in 2017

PROVIDENCE – The average student loan debt per borrower who graduated from a Rhode Island college or university in 2017 was $35,371, the second-highest amount in the nation, according to a report from Lendedu.com this week.

The Ocean State was second only to Pennsylvania for average student loan debt, which had $35,988 of debt per student.

Rhode Island also ranked ninth in the nation for highest percentage of college graduates with student loan debt in 2017 at 63.6%.

State averages were calculated using weighted averages for each college and university within its borders. The report used data from the Peterson’s financial aid survey that gets figures submitted voluntarily from colleges and universities.

The report did not include data from Bristol County Community College, Community College of Rhode Island, Johnson & Wales University, New England Institute of Technology or Rhode Island School of Design.

Rhode Island institution average student debt for 2017:

  • Bryant University: $52,949
  • Roger Williams University: $44,225
  • Salve Regina University: $37,464
  • University of Rhode Island: $33,335
  • Rhode Island College: $25,791
  • Brown University: $25,471

Bristol County, Mass., institution average student debt for 2017:

  • Stonehill College: $36,502
  • Wheaton College: $35,058
  • University of Massachusetts Dartmouth: $31,992

New England student average debt in 2017:

  • Rhode Island: $35,371
  • New Hampshire: $32,783
  • Connecticut: $31,602
  • Massachusetts: $30,722
  • Maine: $30,321
  • Vermont: $28,509
