Report: R.I. nonfarm payrolls increase 1.9 percent in July

PROVIDENCE- July nonfarm payrolls in Rhode Island increased by 9,400 employees year over year, a 1.9 percent increase to 501,800, according to a report released Wednesday by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Data in the most recent BLS report was not seasonally adjusted.

Rhode Island experienced the largest percent increase in nonfarm payroll employees in New England, tied with New Hampshire’s growth.

The Providence metropolitan area also experienced year-over-year growth in July, increasing by 7,700 employees on nonfarm payrolls to 591,900, a 1.3 percent uptick.

Non-seasonally adjusted New England nonfarm payroll increases in July:

  • Rhode Island nonfarm payrolls increased 1.9 percent year over year in July, adding 9,400 employees for a total of 501,800, tied with New Hampshire for the largest percent increase year over year in New England.
  • New Hampshire nonfarm payrolls increased 1.9 percent year over year, a 12,900 addition to a total of 684,200, tied with Rhode Island for the largest percent increase year over year in New England.
  • Massachusetts nonfarm payrolls increased 1.5 percent year over year in July, an uptick of 53,700 employees, bringing the state’s nonfarm payroll employee count to 3.66 million.
  • Maine nonfarm employment rose 1.1 percent year over year in July, increasing 6,900 employees to a total of 642,300.
  • Connecticut nonfarm payroll employees increased 1 percent year over year in July to 1.69 million, a rise of 17,300 employees.
  • Vermont nonfarm payrolls increased 0.4 percent year over year in July to 312,600, an addition of 1,200 workers to payrolls.
