PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island ranked No. 14 in the nation for state and local tax collection revenue per capita in fiscal 2014, according to a Tax Foundation study released Thursday.

Collection per capita in the Ocean State was $5,170.

North Dakota ranked No. 1 for state and local tax revenue collection per capita, however, the study notes the state collects a significant amount in severance tax revenue, which the report suggests is usually an exported tax, one that is paid for by corporations or other organizations but is spread out to consumers across the nation who consume the exported goods.

In New England, Connecticut had the highest state and local tax collection per capita at $7,249. Massachusetts followed second with a collection of $6,014 per capita. Vermont ranked No. 3 at $5,542, followed by Rhode Island at $5,170. Maine ranked No. 5 in New England with an average tax collection of $4,807 per capita, and New Hampshire ranked last at $4,327.

Alabama collected the least tax revenue per capita in the nation with $3,002.
