Rhode Island Blood Center enters affiliation with NYBC

PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island Blood Center has entered into an affiliation with the New York Blood Center, the nonprofit blood supplier announced Tuesday.

“Our partnership with New York Blood Center, who we have worked with for decades, allows us to grow and expand our laboratory services with potential to add new customers,” said Lawrence F. Smith, president and CEO of RIBC, in a statement. Smith also said the nonprofit intends to add 15 new medical-technical jobs to its Providence location after the affiliation. “[It allows] us to expand into exciting new areas, such as translational and applied research that NYBC specializes in to help develop better treatments for all types of diseases.”

The organizations will also share best practices and efficiencies in all of their service lines.

Smith also notes that RIBC’s “donors, blood drive sponsors, and hospital customers will continue to receive the same high-quality services and blood products they have come to expect from us. The long-term goal is to maximize the operational synergies between our two organizations.”

Under the agreement between the two companies, RIBC will continue to operate under its own name and FDA licensure. Both companies remain nonprofit organizations.

According to RIBC, NYBC is now responsible for over 800,000 units of blood annually, of which RIBC is responsible for about 75,000 units.
