Rhode Island Community Food Bank receives $100K grant from Point32Health

PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island Community Food Bank received a $100,000 grant from the Point32Health Foundation to increase its capacity in response to a growing need for emergency food support.

The Providence-based food bank was among one of seven food banks in New England to receive the funding, for a total of $700,000.

“One third of households in Rhode Island are struggling to afford enough food right now as inflation cuts into household budgets,” said Rhode Island Community Food Bank CEO Andrew Schiff. “We are incredibly grateful for the $100,000 grant from Piont32Health Foundation, which will make a huge difference in our ability to meet the need for food assistance this winter.”

The grant will support general operations of the food bank, including staff salaries, food purchases and distribution costs, and advocacy efforts.

“In a time of increasing need, food banks and their partners in [the] community play a critical role, distributing millions of pounds of food and other essentials to people who need it most,” said Greg Shell, chair of the Point32Health Foundation board of directors and partner at Goldman Sachs. “These investments anticipate an increased demand for a basic human right – access to food.”

Other food banks that received grants included Connecticut Foodshare in Connecticut; Good Shepherd Food Bank in Maine; Food Bank of Western Massachusetts, Greater Boston Food Bank and Worcester County Food Bank in Massachusetts; and New Hampshire Food Bank in New Hampshire.

“Food banks face increased costs, unprecedented inflation, supply chain challenges, and reductions in volunteers and other community supports,” said Nora Moreno Cargie, president of Point32Health Foundation and vice president for corporate citizenship at Point32Health Co. “This funding will help respond to these immediate needs, as well as support advocacy to address the root causes of food insecurity.”
