PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island Energy said Wednesday that it has restored power to 99% of its customers who lost electricity during the historic snowstorm on Feb. 23. As of 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, only 336 customers were without power. During the storm’s peak, 50,000 were in the dark. The bulk of the current power outages were in the Narragansett area, according to Rhode Island Energy’s power outage map. About 38 Narragansett customers were without power and 24 customers in Point Judith still needed electricity to be restored. In its press release Wednesday, Rhode Island Energy said more than 400 crews and 1,400 personnel were deployed during the storm. Additional crews were brought in from New Jersey and Pennsylvania. “First and foremost, I want to thank our RIE team for their extraordinary work and dedication during this historic storm,” said Kathy Castro, vice president of electric operations at Rhode Island Energy. “Even with nearly 3 feet of heavy snow, hurricane‑force wind gusts, and widespread damage, our teams restored power to over 99% of affected customers in less than two days and expect to have the remaining customers back by tomorrow. We appreciate our customers’ understanding and our crews’ exceptional work under extremely challenging conditions.” Starting in the evening on Feb. 23, the storm brought record-breaking snowfall to Rhode Island Monday, with cities and towns recording more than 30 inches of accumulation. Rhode Island T.F. Green international Airport in Warwick led the state in snow depth, reporting 38 inches and blowing away a previous record set by the “Blizzard of ’78” by almost 10 inches. The storm, which people already refer to as the “Blizzard of ’26,” also brought strong winds that peaked at 60–70 mph along the state’s coastline and on Block Island. These gusts combined with wet, heavy snow caused downed trees and branches, further contributing to outages. During the heart of the storm, officials warned that some customers could be without power for three days. Rhode Island Energy President Greg Cornett said that day that storm’s winds were hampering restoration crews. Power also returned for many of the hundreds of thousands who had lost electricity in Massachusetts, New Jersey and Delaware. But nearly 160,000 customers in Massachusetts were still without power early Wednesday. Cape Cod, which accounted for most of the outages in the state, slowly began to see power return Wednesday, with utility Eversource promising that “99% of customers” would have electricity restored by Feb. 26.
