PROVIDENCE – Gas prices rose 2 cents from last week in both Rhode Island and Massachusetts, AAA Southern New England reported Monday.
The auto club’s Jan. 10 survey found the average price of self-serve, unleaded regular at Ocean State stations was $3.17, up two pennies from last week and 9 cents above the national average of $3.08.
Massachusetts matched the national average at $3.08 but had a 30 cent range in prices, wider than Rhode Island’s 19 cent range.
Bloomberg News reported that crude oil rose in early trading rose after BP Plc and its partners in the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System, closed it Sunday afternoon. The pipe carries 15 percent of U.S. output, but the group could not say when production would return after the line was shut following a leak.
Crude oil for February delivery increased $1.56, or 1.8 percent, to $89.59 a barrel at 9:01 a.m. on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Prices are up 8.3 percent from a year ago.
A year ago, gas prices in Rhode Island were $2.74 per gallon.
At stations in Rhode Island this week, the survey found average self-serve prices of $3.28 per gallon for midgrade unleaded, $3.40 for premium unleaded gasoline and $3.39 for diesel.
This week, the auto club recommended that drivers go “gentle on the pedals,” noting aggressive driving can lower a car’s fuel economy by 33 percent.
