PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island Hospital employees donated more than 3,700 toys through the hospital’s Toy Drive Challenge as part of a series of charitable collections known at Lifespan Corp. as the Season of Giving.

The toys were delivered on Dec. 16 by Teamsters Local 251 to Angels in the Community at the intersection of Broad Street and Sumter Street. The community organization donated the toys to make the holiday brighter for children in the neighborhood surrounding the hospital.

Rhode Island Hospital President Margaret M. Van Bree was on hand to accept special recognition for the hospital from Angels in the Community.

New this year in the employee toy drive were two challenges – one for most creative presentation of the toys and the other for the most toys collected per person in a department.

The central transport team won for creative presentation with its rendition of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.”

The information services (front desk) department collected the greatest number of toys per person, with 102 total toys from its 10-person staff, for an average of 10.2 toys per employee.

While official tallies were not kept in previous years, the friendly competition spurred visibly larger numbers of toys than in years past.
