An opening gala will be held Aug. 8 at the Providence Performing Arts Center celebrating Flickers’ 35th anniversary and to honor competition winners and screen nine short films from around the world. “We salute Flickers and the prestigious Rhode Island International Film Festival for celebrating 35 years of excellence,” said Steven Feinberg, executive director of the Rhode Island Film & Television Office. “Each year, I am amazed by the quality of the various productions from around the globe, including many homegrown productions created right here in our very own Ocean State.”

Tannaz Hazemi of Brooklyn, N.Y., will receive the festival’s screenplay competition award for her screenplay, “Dean The Drummer.”
