WARWICK – Rhode Island Medical Imaging Inc. has completed its acquisition of XRA Medical Imaging on Tuesday, almost a year after talks of negotiation started circulating.
John Pezzullo, president of Warwick-based Rhode Island Medical Imaging, the largest private radiology practice in the state, confirmed the acquisition, which first circulated in October 2021.

Learn More“RIMI values the service which XRA has provided to our state for over 50 years,” Pezzullo said. “We thank them for putting their trust in RIMI and the opportunity to serve all Rhode Islanders.”
All XRA locations are set to temporarily close before reopening under RIMI the week of Aug. 29, Pezzullo said. In the meantime, the facilities will undergo “cosmetic updates” and computer systems installations.
“RIMI’s mission is to provide the highest level of care to our patients,” Pezzullo said. “All RIMI patients – our current patients and those we’ll welcome from XRA – can continue to expect the highest quality service with state-of-the-art technology and our subspecialized radiologists.”
At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Cranston-based XRA Medical Imaging had reported a bleak financial situation that forced it to lay off 15 employees and stop recruiting radiologists, secretaries and technicians. As of March 2020, the company had 105 employees.
Rhode Island Medical Imaging has been operating for more than 75 years according to their website, with 12 locations across the state. XRA has six locations in Smithfield, Cranston, Warwick, Wakefield, and two offices in Johnston.
“We are excited to expand the reach of our services throughout Rhode Island, as XRA patients will now have access to RIMI’s full suite of services and locations,” Pezzullo said. “Existing RIMI patients will have increased access to services in southern Rhode Island now through the Wakefield location.”
It is unclear what the acquisition means for current XRA employees, as RIMI has not responded to further requests for comment and XRA Medical Imaging could not immediately be reached for comment.
