LEBANON, NH – Dr. James N. Weinstein, CEO and President of Dartmouth-Hitchcock, announced today that Elwood “Skip” Leonard will lead the institution’s philanthropic programs starting in August 2013.

“The timing is perfect for Skip to join Dartmouth-Hitchcock and build on our existing philanthropic support,” said Dr. Weinstein. “After a nationwide recruitment effort, we selected Skip for his strong experience leading the fundraising operations of other health care and higher education institutions, his keen understanding of the challenges in health care today, and his alignment with Dartmouth-Hitchcock’s vision for creating a sustainable health system.  To continue to deliver the best education, research, innovation, and care we must share our stories more widely and engage stakeholders more broadly. I look forward to Skip’s leadership and collaboration as we work to improve the lives of the people and communities we serve for generations to come.”

Leonard currently serves as Vice President and Chief Development Officer at St. Vincent Health System and St. Vincent Foundation in Little Rock, Ark. In that role, he created a grateful patient program led by doctors, established and led funding strategies for the new Center for Advancing Innovation and broke all giving records to the institution. He holds a BA in political science from Ohio Wesleyan and MPAs from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government and the University of Kansas’ Edwin O. Stene Master’s Program in Public Administration. The native Rhode Islander has two children and is married to Julie, a University of California Berkeley graduate and lawyer. He and his family are avid tennis players, fly fishing enthusiasts and college hockey fans.

“I’m inspired by what Dr. Weinstein and the Dartmouth-Hitchcock team have already done.  And I am attracted by the academic health system’s national leadership in shaping the future of health care. Working with colleagues at Dartmouth-Hitchcock, Dartmouth College and the Geisel School of Medicine, I am confident that we can attract more hearts and minds to support the outstanding care that is delivered across New Hampshire, Vermont and beyond. Our family also looks forward to moving to the Upper Valley and becoming active members of the community. “
