R.I. ‘Cure Kids’ Cancer’ radiothon raises $700K

PROVIDENCE – Last week’s “Cure Kids’ Cancer” raised $700,000 to support pediatric cancer treatment and research at Hasbro Children’s Hospital, the hospital announced today. Donations are still being accepted at the hospital’s Web site.

The three-day event was broadcast live from Hasbro’s Children’s Hospital on March 27 and 28, and live from local Dunkin’ Donuts locations on the 29th. During the event – heard on 92 PRO-FM, Lite Rock 105, HOT 106, News Talk 630 WPRO and 99.7 FM – children with cancer and their families told personal stories, as did their physicians, nurses, teachers, social workers, child-life specialists and hospital administrators.

“We are so grateful to Citadel [Broadcasting] for their efforts in making this great program happen, and we can’t begin to thank the community for their incredible generosity,” said Dr. Cindy Schwartz, director of the pediatric hematology and oncology program at Hasbro Hospital. “Their support will make a significant difference to the children and families of our community who are facing a battle with cancer.”

The radiothon, started in 2005, has raised a total of $3.1 million to date. The event is a partnership of Citadel Broadcasting Providence, Cure Kids Cancer, and Hasbro Children’s Hospital
