WASHINGTON – Rhode Island will receive an additional $843,229 in emergency heating assistance as part of a second wave of supplemental funding for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, according to U.S. Sen. Jack Reed.
The Ocean State has already received $17.9 million in LIHEAP funding this fiscal year, including $4.47 million that was released last month. (READ MORE.) Last year, nearly 30,000 Rhode Island households received LIHEAP assistance to help heat their homes or pay delinquent utility bills so they could reestablish service.
“When temperatures drop, heating bills rise for many Rhode Island families,” said Reed, who is chairman of the Northeast-Midwest Coalition, a bipartisan group of senators that seeks to advance their regions’ economy and environment. “This additional funding will help lift the burden on many seniors and parents who need help paying their energy bills.”
Massachusetts and Connecticut also are among the 10 states receiving additional LIHEAP aid in the current round of financing, along with Alaska, Delaware, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York Pennsylvania and Vermont.
The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is a federal block-grant program that provides states with annual funding to operate home energy-assistance programs for low-income households. For more information, visit www.liheap.org.
