R.I. inauguration set for Jan. 2 at State House

PROVIDENCE – The inauguration of Gov. Donald L. Carcieri and the state’s other general officers is scheduled to begin at noon on Tuesday, Jan. 2, on the South Terrace of the State House. A public reception in the State House will follow.

Also being sworn in will be the Lt. Gov.-elect Elizabeth H. Roberts, Attorney General Patrick C. Lynch, Secretary of State-elect A. Ralph Mollis and General Treasurer-elect Frank T. Caprio.

The R.I. National Guard is in charge of planning and staging the inauguration.

Carcieri announced last week that the 2007 Inaugural Ball will be held that evening, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., at Rhodes-on-the-Pawtuxet in Cranston.

The Inaugural Ball will have a distinctly Rhode Island theme, the governor’s office said, with some table centerpieces featuring products from Rhode Island companies and institutions. Light hors d’hoeuvres and desserts will be served. Entertainment will include music by the Night Life Orchestra and performances by the Big Nazo Puppets and the Johnson & Wales Ballroom and Latin Dance Team.

The ball will be free and open to the public. Black-tie attire is optional. Because of the limited parking, guests are encouraged to carpool; a shuttle will be available to provide transport from the upper parking lots.

A 9 a.m. Mass, at the Cathedral of SS. Peter & Paul, in Providence, is also planned to celebrate the inauguration, the governor’s office said.
