PROVIDENCE – A $614,882 grant from the federal government will help the Gateway to Independence Program at Nickerson Community Center expand its services for homeless Rhode Island veterans.

U.S. Sen. Jack Reed (D-R.I.), the acting chairman of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Veterans Affairs, worked to secure more than $200,000 in federal funding to establish the program in 1997. The additional funding will nearly triple the number of beds at the Commmunity Center.

Since 1997, the Gateway to Independence Program has offerred 18 beds for homeless veterans and has provided services including substance abuse treatment, job training and referrals, and mental health services.
