WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development last week announced that Rhode Island public housing authorities would receive $668,370 in funding as part of a $48.9 million national grant program.
In Rhode Island, the funding will go to:
• Housing Authority of the City of Providence, $125,228
• Central Falls Housing Authority, $63,453
• East Providence Housing Authority, $38,764
• Cumberland Housing Authority, $66,000
• Warwick Housing Authority, $41,000
• Coventry Housing Authority, $50,556
• Town of North Providence Housing Authority, $55,151
• Town of Bristol Housing Authority, $36,360
• Housing Authority of the Town of East Greenwich, $55,431
• Narragansett Housing Authority, $76,427
• Rhode Island Housing, $60,000
Funded through HUD’s Housing Choice Voucher Family Self-Sufficiency Program, the grants come with the stipulation that the money will be used to help the 11 Rhode Island housing authorities help residents and clients get hired and keep their jobs.
“This program has proven its effectiveness in helping families to develop the skills that lead to stable employment,” HUD Secretary Steve Preston said in a statement last Friday. “Getting a decent job and increasing a person’s potential for higher-paying employment is the first step to becoming economically independent.”
