R.I. to get boost in Title I funds for poor students

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rhode Island will receive a $3.1 million increase in Title I funding in fiscal year 2007, for a total of more than $50.3 million, U.S. Sen. Jack Reed recently announced.
Title I is a federal program that provides funding to help schools better serve low-income children from kindergarten through 12th grade. Nearly one-third of the state’s schools receive Title I funds; to qualify, they typically must have at least 40 percent of their students whose families qualify as low-income under U.S. Census Bureau definitions.
Nearly half the increase, $1.3 million, will go to the Providence schools.
“It is essential for the federal government to help provide local schools with the resources they need to educate our young people,” Reed said in a news release. “Title I is an important source of funding for many of our school districts, and I am pleased Rhode Island will be getting an increase in federal support this year.”
