R.I. to receive $10.9M in federal housing aid

WASHINGTON – Rhode Island is slated to receive $10.88 million from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, according to U.S. Sen. Jack Reed.
The money, to be disbursed through four HUD programs, includes:
• $5.32 million as Community Development Block Grants, an increase of 27.2 percent from last year, to renovate public buildings, provide low-cost loans to needy residents and increase services to neighborhood and senior centers;
• $5.12 million through the HOME Investment Partnership, to aid in rehabilitating and creating affordable housing.
• $348,000 in Emergency Shelter Grants to public and private organizations that shelter the homeless.
• $97,000 for the American Dream Downpayment Initiative, which aims to increase home ownership, especially among low-income and minority households, by helping first-time buyers with down payment and closing costs.
“This funding provides safe, decent, affordable housing for Rhode Island’s working families and seniors,” said Reed, a member of the Senate Banking Committee. “It allows our communities … to ensure that current affordable housing is properly maintained and to provide emergency shelter and assistance to those most in need.”
