R.I. wins $500k to help replace Salty Brine pavilion

WASHINGTON – The R.I. Department of Environmental Management has been awarded a federal grant of $500,000 to help replace the pavilion at Salty Brine Beach in Narragansett, U.S. Sen. Jack Reed announced today. The state will match the federal aid, providing another $500,000 toward the project.
The federal share will come from the Land and Water Conservation Fund. A partnership program administered by the National Parks Service, the fund provides matching grants to states and communities for the acquisition, development and conservation of parks and open space. Reed is a member of the Appropriations Subcommittee on the Interior, which oversees Park Service spending.
“Salty Brine Beach is a wonderful family beach that gets a lot of use from both tourists and Rhode Islanders,” he said. It was known as Galilee State Beach until 1990, when it was dedicated to Brine, Rhode Island’s best-known radio personality.
The new facility will be designed to meet current accessibility requirements.
“The existing facility is over 25 years old and in need of replacement,” Reed said. “I am pleased the federal government is investing in upgrading Salty Brine’s facilities so that future generations of beachgoers can continue to enjoy picnicking in the area, fishing and watching the boats come in.”
