RIDOT announces return of free train service to air show

PROVIDENCE – The R.I. Department of Transportation announced the return of free train service to the Rhode Island National Guard Open House and Air Show June 9-10 at the Quonset Business Park in North Kingstown.

The show’s headliner this year, the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, is expected to draw large crowds, according to the department. RIDOT estimated roughly 4,000 people took advantage of the free train service in each of the past two years.

“Being stuck in long lines of traffic has been part of the experience for the Air Show, and we’re proud to deliver a solution that helps reduce congestion and delays,” RIDOT Director Peter Alviti Jr. said in a statement. “This event is shaping up to be busier than it has been for the past few years – another great reason to take the train and leave the driving to us.”

Riders will be able to catch trains from the Providence, T.F. Green or Wickford Junction Stations, where there will be free parking (Providence Station riders will have first-come, first-served free parking available at the State Offices complex parking lots).

RIDOT reminded riders that backpacks, coolers, bicycles and pets are not allowed on the trains, nor at the air show.

Gates open at 9 a.m. and flying starts at 11 a.m. Admission is free.

Visitors to the show are being asked to make a $10 donation that will directly support the Hasbro Children’s Hospital.
