RIDOT announces upcoming lane shift on I-295

CRANSTON – A new lane shift will be put in place on Interstate 295 north near exit 6 at the Cranston and Johnston line, the R.I. Department of Transportation announced Wednesday.

All traffic will shift to a temporary bridge built between the northbound and southbound bridges. The shift, which is scheduled to begin June 24, will first affect northbound traffic and will be in place until spring 2020. Following that, the shift will impact southbound traffic.

No exits or on-ramps will be closed as part of the shift.

The traffic pattern disruption will allow RIDOT to replace four bridges that carry 82,000 vehicles per day. RIDOT said three of the four bridges have already been determined to be structurally deficient.
