PROVIDENCE – Thomas Guthlein, operations section chief for the R.I. Emergency Management Agency, received the 2018 Emergency Manager of the Year Award from the Northeast States Emergency Consortium.
The award, announced by RIEMA July 27, recognizes individuals “who have exhibited the highest standard of excellence, dedication and accomplishment in the field of emergency management.”
Guthlein has been an employee of RIEMA for five years and is responsible for the day-to-day operational functions of the agency.
In addition to directing emergency efforts for two winter storms, a hurricane and the search for missing swimmers on Johnson Pond and Narragansett Beach in 2017, Guthlein oversaw the implementation of FirstNet, a system that allows first responders from different city and state agencies to communicate.
