PROVIDENCE – In celebration of black philanthropy month, a Wednesday release from the Rhode Island Foundation called on nonprofit organizations serving Rhode Island’s African American population to submit grant applications to the Rhode Island Foundation’s new Black Philanthropy Bannister Fund.

“Our intent is to attract interest and applications from organizations that focus on the unique needs of the Black community in Rhode Island, including those organizations that have a tradition of serving the community,” said Adrian Bonéy, the foundation’s program officer for special programs, in a statement.

Grants, totaling nearly $90,000, are available from the foundation in two areas. First, programs which target urban African American youth and provide mentoring opportunities and can lead to educational success, empowerment and avoiding risky behaviors. Second, for community organizations which support and promote the history and achievements, preserve the culture of and uplift African American Rhode Islanders.

This request marks the first round of grants after the merger of the foundation’s former Black Philanthropy Initiative and the board of the former Bannister House nursing home. Applications are due by September 15.
